Pre-glued base panels fold into a locked floor as the carton is opened. An auto lock bottom, also called a crash-lock bottom, is a folding-carton structure whose base arrives glued in the collapsed blank. Pushing opposite corners squares the carton and seats the bottom flaps. Actual load capacity still depends on board stiffness, base area, glue coverage, product weight, and whether the contents spread that weight evenly.
Auto lock belongs within the broader custom tuck box family, but its base changes the packing sequence. Before artwork begins, erect an unprinted sample, load the product, lift it from the side panels, and check whether the floor bows or the glue joint pulls.
Neither base wins every load test: auto lock prioritizes fast erection, while snap lock gives the packer direct control over four interlocking flaps. A snap lock bottom is a manually assembled base whose flaps fold into one another. Its performance, like an auto base, comes from the complete specification rather than the closure name alone.
| Carton structure | Bottom closure | Packing action | Common fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auto lock bottom | Pre-glued folding base | Square the blank and seat the floor | Repeated hand-packing lines |
| Snap lock bottom | Four manually interlocked flaps | Fold each flap in sequence | Short runs and varied products |
| Straight tuck end | Tuck flap at each end | Close end panels after loading | Lightweight retail goods |
| Seal end | End flaps closed with adhesive | Fill, then glue the end | Cartons needing a sealed closure |
Compare the manual base on custom snap lock bottom boxes with the simpler closure on custom straight tuck boxes. The useful test is the filled carton on the intended packing line, not a flat sample viewed in isolation.
A base usually bows when concentrated product weight lands between the supporting flaps or the carton has not been fully squared. A wide bottle, insert foot, or tray can spread the load; a narrow contact point can force one flap downward. Test the heaviest packed configuration, including any cap, cable, literature, or protective wrap that changes the center of gravity.
The glue joint also needs uninterrupted contact on clean board. Heavy ink, coating, dust, or a window patch in the adhesive zone can weaken the bond. Review the dieline with the actual loading direction, because rotating the product can move its weight onto a less supported part of the floor.
Repeated erection with the real product reveals more than an empty sample. Load the base, close the tuck flap, lift the carton, set it on a shelf, and reopen it to inspect glue, score whitening, panel bow, and flap memory. Then pack collapsed blanks and filled units into their planned master cartons so bundle pressure does not pre-open the floor or crush the tuck edge.
Use physical samples to compare board stiffness, fold behavior, and print surfaces before releasing the specification.
SBS, C1S, or C2S can be specified from 12 through 24 pt for a folding auto base, while kraft versions generally use 18 through 24 pt stock. Caliper alone does not predict bottom performance, because base area, score quality, glue pattern, and load concentration also affect the floor. A polyethylene terephthalate (PET) window can use 0.2 to 0.3 mm film, but its patch cannot cross the base scores or adhesive path.
Background color normally extends 0.125 inch beyond the cut line under common prepress practice. Bright on-screen greens and blues may print less intensely on kraft or uncoated board, so judge the approved proof against the chosen stock. At press, check color, fine reverse type, foil position, score alignment, and whether dense ink coverage fractures when the base is erected.
