Do not assume a printed edible box is suitable for direct product contact; ask us about food-contact options. Board, ink, coating, adhesive, and any inner layer all matter, and a material name alone does not answer the direct-contact question.
Tell us whether the edible product sits loose in the carton, arrives in a wrapper, or uses an inner pouch. That detail changes the box brief, insert, coating, and proof review. Keep the printed package separate from product-specific handling and labeling decisions.
Paperboard is the usual starting point for an edible product carton, but moisture, oil, temperature, and direct contact determine the construction. Kraft paperboard leaves a brown fiber tone in the artwork. White paperboard gives a light print surface. Corrugated board adds a fluted layer when the outer package needs more structure.
| Material | Surface | Useful role | Check before approval |
|---|---|---|---|
| White paperboard | Light, even print surface | Printed cartons for wrapped or inner-packed products | Artwork contrast, scores, and direct-contact question |
| Kraft paperboard | Brown fiber base | Stock appearance that stays visible in the design | Pale ink, small type, and coating placement |
| Corrugated board | Fluted layer between paper liners | Outer packs, dividers, and added board structure | Flute direction, fold alignment, and insert fit |
| Rigid-style construction | Chipboard wrapped in printed paper | Boxes that need a defined shape and firm walls | Product clearance, wrap direction, and lid movement |
A paperboard box does not create a moisture or oxygen barrier on its own. A separate inner wrap or pouch may be needed for products that are oily, moist, or sensitive to air; ask us about packaging options for your packout.
Matte lamination reduces glare and gloss lamination increases shine, but neither finish should be treated as a product barrier without a specific review. UV coating cures hard and glossy; it can crack at scores and is harder to write on. Aqueous coating is water-based, dries fast, and can suit flaps where glue and ink need to work.
Light protection also depends on the product layer inside the box. A printed carton can cover the outside, but it should not be treated as a tested light barrier without product-specific confirmation. State the wrapper, inner pouch, display position, and storage conditions in the brief.
Size an edible box from the assembled product and its wrapper or inner pack. An insert is a shaped support inside the box; it holds pieces apart and reduces movement. A cavity cut to the bare product can pinch once a wrapper is added, while a loose cavity lets pieces rattle.
We draw the dieline free from the product dimensions and send a digital proof before anything prints. A dieline is the flat cutting template used to print, score, fold, and cut the package. Check the panel order, scores, cut edges, glue tabs, insert position, bleed, and artwork at the actual panel size.
The MOQ is 100 units, and pricing is from $0.49 per unit at volume, quoted to spec. Free design support covers the dieline discussion, and free US shipping is available. Production is typically 8 to 10 business days after proof approval, plus delivery.
A $19.99 sample kit is credited toward the first order and can help your team compare a box structure before artwork approval. Compare custom vial boxes when the item is compact or held upright, or review custom woozy bottle boxes when the package starts with a bottle profile. The custom packaging solutions hub can help compare formats.
Send the product dimensions, wrapper or inner-pack details, insert needs, artwork status, quantity, and destination with the quote request. Ask us about food-contact options before approving any direct-contact use.
Custom edible boxes should not be assumed suitable for direct product contact; ask us about food-contact options. Board, ink, coating, adhesive, and any inner layer need to match the intended use. Tell the supplier whether the product is loose, wrapped, or held inside another pouch before the structure and artwork are approved.
Paperboard is a common starting point for custom edible boxes, while kraft paperboard keeps a brown fiber surface and corrugated board adds a fluted layer for outer structure. The product wrapper, moisture, oil, temperature, and direct-contact question should guide the material discussion.
A paperboard box does not create a moisture or oxygen barrier by itself. Oily, moist, or air-sensitive products may need a separate wrapper or pouch. Matte, gloss, UV, and aqueous treatments change the surface finish, but they should not be treated as a product barrier without specific confirmation.
