Branded paper lunch bags are ordered to the ship-to location, while a nearby restaurant-supply store is mainly useful when blank bags are needed immediately. Printed bags require an approved production template, an artwork check, and a delivery plan tied to the final destination. Compare available formats within food packaging and inspect paper, print, and handle options through physical samples before approving the specification.
An SOS bag handles a boxed meal better than a flat bag because its block bottom stands during packing. SOS means self-opening sack, a paper-bag structure with side gussets and a rectangular bottom. A flat satchel saves storage space for thin items, while a handled carry-out format is better when several containers travel together.
| Bag style | Construction | Useful load | Packing note |
|---|---|---|---|
| SOS lunch bag | Block bottom with side gussets | Boxed meal and snack packs | Stands open at the packing station |
| Flat satchel | Two flat faces without a bottom panel | Wrapped pastry, napkins, or light snacks | Limited depth for rigid containers |
| Handled carry-out bag | Block bottom with attached handles | Multiple containers | Confirm balance at the handle points |
Uncoated kraft has a natural brown surface and can show paper fibers through light ink coverage. White kraft provides a brighter base for color. When the order needs handles and a wider opening, compare carry-out bags. For a narrower gusseted format intended for dry products, compare coffee kraft bags.
The meal's widest rigid container sets the minimum footprint, while the tallest item plus fold-over space sets the required height. Paper bag dimensions are normally written as width x gusset x height. Check the full meal together, including cups, wrapped utensils, napkins, and any rigid tray that controls the footprint.
Use a physical packing test instead of adding generous space everywhere. Excess width lets containers tip, too little gusset prevents the bag from opening squarely, and insufficient height removes the fold-over area at the top. Set heavy, flat containers over the block bottom and keep tall containers upright. Ordinary paper is not a liquid barrier, so wet items need a separate primary container or liner. Ask us about food-contact options for the intended use.
The front and back panels carry marks more consistently than a gusset or block-bottom fold. Keep small type and fine rules away from creases, seam overlap, and the fold-over top. Extend background artwork 0.125 inch beyond any cut edge under common prepress practice. Low-resolution images soften at bag scale, while artwork prepared for screens can shift when converted for the selected press inks.
Flexographic printing is common for repeated paper-bag runs because flexible plates transfer ink while the paper web moves through the press. Digital printing can suit shorter or versioned runs without conventional plates. The practical crossover depends on color count, coverage, plate cost, and quantity. During a press check, inspect registration, pinholes in solid areas, small-type clarity, and ink buildup where the bag folds.
A squarely formed block bottom and fully opened side gussets create the standing footprint. If the bottom folds do not seat, the bag leans before the first container is loaded. Paper grain direction, score placement, side-seam adhesion, and the relationship between container width and gusset depth all affect whether the bag stays open at a busy packing station.
Test the bag with the actual meal sequence. Place the broadest container first, keep the center of gravity low, and check whether a folded top presses against lids or tall cups. Flat bags should be bundled without crushing their gussets, then held square in master cartons. Bundle count and carton count should match the storage shelf and daily packing rate rather than an arbitrary case size.
