A slotted box is a package with cut slots, tabs, or panel relationships that position a product, guide assembly, support an insert, or keep a closure shut. A dieline is the flat cutting template used to print, score, cut, and fold the package. Start with the job the slot must perform, then draw the slot beside the product, score, seam, glue area, and opening path. That sequence catches a bad fit before the box reaches a press.

What does a slot need to do?

A location slot needs clearance around the product; a closure slot needs clean engagement between a tab and a panel. Write the function in plain language, then mark every opening on the structural drawing. A slot can hold one component, receive a tuck tab, join a divider, guide a fold, or create a controlled display opening.

Insert supportConnects a divider, tray, or presentation pieceDoes the insert stay supported during handling?

Which box structure fits the slot?

Straight tuck end and reverse tuck end cartons put closure tabs on different panel relationships. Auto-lock bottom and crash-lock bases create a formed bottom without a separate hand-taped step. A sleeve, gable, pillow, drawer or slide, and two-piece rigid box can use a slot for positioning or opening behavior. For shipping, a regular slotted container is a corrugated case reference. A mailer can use a roll end tuck top, with FEFCO 0427 named beside the request so the structural code and intended style do not get mixed up.

Which board or flute should you compare?

SBS means solid bleached sulfate, C1S means coated one side, and C2S means coated two sides. Those paperboard stocks are often discussed in the 12 to 24 pt range for printed folding cartons, while kraft board is often discussed in the 18 to 24 pt range. Corrugated board uses flutes to set its profile and stacking behavior. E, B, and C flutes are useful comparison points; 32 ECT, or edge crush test, is a general strength reference. Rigid chipboard from 1.5 to 3 mm, wrapped in 100 to 157 gsm art paper, is a separate construction because the board holds its shape without a fold.

How do you set dimensions and clearance?

Write inside length x width x depth, then locate each slot from the product edge, insert, seam, score, and fold. About 1/16 in (1.5 mm) tolerance is a common convention to discuss during dieline review, but the product still needs a physical fit check. If the box will travel through a US ground carrier, use L x W x H / 139 as a dimensional-weight planning reference for the outside footprint.

Which print and finish choices fit the structure?

Offset CMYK suits detailed paperboard artwork, flexo is a usual corrugated print reference, and digital printing can suit short runs or artwork testing. Matte or gloss lamination changes the surface and the way a solid color reads. Soft-touch, spot UV, foil stamping, embossing, and debossing need their own marked areas on the artwork. Keep type, barcodes, and fine lines away from slots, scores, folds, seams, and glue tabs.

Can a window work with a slotted box?

PET, or polyethylene terephthalate, is a clear film used for a patched window; 0.2 to 0.3 mm is a common reference range. Place the window around the product reveal, then check it against the slot, insert, front-panel artwork, and closure support.

Which catalog pages are useful references?

Window display boxes give a product-reveal reference. Window soap boxes show a compact carton direction, while wallet boxes and waffle boxes can frame different closure and panel questions. Use those product pages to describe the direction, then send the actual product dimensions and slot drawing.

What belongs in a slotted box request?

A useful request states the slot job before the quote is prepared.

  • State what every slot, tab, score, or opening must do.
  • Give inside length, width, and depth plus product orientation.
  • Name the folding-carton, corrugated, sleeve, or rigid direction.
  • Mark board, flute, substrate, insert, or window preferences.
  • Show artwork panels, print coverage, scores, seams, and glue areas.
  • Include the delivery location and handling environment.

Projects are quoted to spec from a 100-unit minimum. Pricing may be from $0.49 per unit at volume, quoted to spec. Production is typically 8 to 10 business days after proof approval, plus delivery. Free US shipping, free design support, and a free dieline make the preparation clearer. The $19.99 sample kit is credited to the first order. See wholesale custom packaging when the slot drawing is ready.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are slotted boxes used for?

Slotted boxes use openings, tabs, or panel relationships to locate a product, support an insert, guide a fold, create a display opening, or close the package. A product-location slot needs clearance around the item, while a closure slot needs a reliable tab-and-panel fit. State the job before anyone fixes the dimensions.

Which material is common for a slotted shipping box?

Corrugated board is a usual direction for shipping formats, with E, B, and C flutes used for different profiles and handling needs. 32 ECT, or edge crush test, is a general strength reference. The product weight, slot function, outside footprint, closure, and handling path still decide the board discussion.

How should slotted box dimensions be written?

Write slotted box dimensions as inside length x width x depth, then locate every slot against the product, insert, score, seam, and closure. About 1/16 in (1.5 mm) tolerance is a common convention to discuss during dieline review. A physical fit check remains necessary when the slot controls product movement.

Can slotted boxes use print and special finishes?

Slotted boxes can use offset CMYK for detailed paperboard graphics, flexo for corrugated components, or digital printing for short runs and artwork testing. Matte or gloss lamination, soft-touch, spot UV, foil stamping, embossing, and debossing can be mapped around functional slots, scores, seams, and glue areas.

When does a window make sense on a slotted box?

A window makes sense when the package needs a visible product reveal. PET, or polyethylene terephthalate, in the 0.2 to 0.3 mm range is a common window-patching reference. Position the opening around the product and check that it does not remove the support the slot or insert must provide.
