Spot UV is a clear gloss coating applied only to selected artwork areas. On a box, it can make a logo, border, product name, or pattern catch light while the surrounding field stays matte, soft-touch, or uncoated. The coating does not cover the whole panel. The artwork file should show the printed colors and gloss areas separately so the proof matches the finished package.

What does spot UV do on a box?

A clear cured layer can make one mark catch light while the rest of the carton stays quiet. The contrast is strongest when the base uses matte lamination, soft-touch lamination, or an uncoated surface. Spot UV can give a logo or small pattern a tactile edge, but fine areas need separation from folds, cuts, and glue flaps. It works as a selective surface treatment, not as a substitute for readable artwork.

SBS, C1S, and C2S paperboard are commonly used in the 12 to 24 pt range for printed folding cartons. Kraft board is commonly specified around 18 to 24 pt when the natural surface remains visible. The final board follows product weight, fold pattern, print coverage, opening style, and hand feel.

Which structures suit selective gloss?

The coating belongs on the panel a customer sees first, not across every functional area. Straight tuck end and reverse tuck end cartons can use a gloss mark on the front or top, while auto-lock bottoms and crash-lock bases keep the bottom clear of finish. Mailers, sleeves, and two-piece rigid boxes give different opening views. Place the mask around the panel hierarchy, folds, cuts, and glue flaps.

How should I prepare the gloss artwork?

The press file needs two separate instructions: CMYK artwork and a clearly labeled gloss mask. The mask should show exactly where the coating lands, while CMYK carries the printed colors. Offset CMYK works for detailed paperboard graphics, digital printing can suit short runs, and flexo is commonly associated with corrugated packaging. A proof review should check registration, contrast, opening direction, and whether the gloss area holds the eye where intended.

Keep critical type and fine marks away from folds, cut lines, glue flaps, and tight corners. A press check looks at registration, ink coverage, gloss edges, and the folded panel order. The gloss layer should support the artwork, not cover a barcode or make small copy harder to read.

Which finish combinations should I compare?

Matte lamination gives the strongest gloss contrast, while soft-touch creates a smooth field beneath sharper highlights. Gloss lamination gives an all-over sheen and leaves spot UV for selected details. Embossing, debossing, and foil stamping add physical or metallic marks. Compare the tactile result on the actual board, because kraft color and ink coverage change how a clear coating reads.

Window soap boxes, window display boxes, and window boxes show three different places for a selective finish. Compare window soap boxes, window display boxes, and window boxes when product visibility matters. PET windows are commonly around 0.2 to 0.3 mm, subject to the box structure and opening. Check the patch, folds, and gloss mask together.

How do board and shipping details change the quote?

A 12 pt carton and a rigid 3 mm lid do not travel or price the same way. Quote inputs include board caliper, print coverage, finish coverage, structure, tooling, quantity breaks, and shipping zone. Write box dimensions as length x width x depth, with inside dimensions for fit planning. About 1/16 in, or 1.5 mm, is a common tolerance reference. US ground carriers commonly calculate dimensional weight with L x W x H divided by 139. Packed size matters even when the empty box feels light.

What should I inspect before approval?

A folded sample can reveal registration drift that a flat artwork file hides.

  • Check the gloss mask against the printed artwork and panel order.
  • Keep coating away from scores, cuts, glue flaps, barcodes, and small type.
  • Inspect ink coverage, gloss edges, foil or embossing registration, and folded corners.
  • View the finished box under ordinary retail lighting and from the opening side.

If the box touches food, ask us about food-contact options for your product and review the materials, inks, coatings, and separation before approving the finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does spot UV differ from gloss lamination?

Gloss lamination covers the selected panel or package surface with an overall shiny film. Spot UV lands only on defined areas, so it can highlight a logo, pattern, or product name against matte lamination, soft-touch lamination, or an uncoated field. The contrast comes from the artwork mask, which makes the finish selective rather than all-over.

Can selective gloss go on kraft board?

Spot UV can be considered on kraft board, but the visible result depends on the board surface, ink coverage, and whether the kraft color remains exposed. Kraft board is commonly specified around 18 to 24 pt. Review a physical proof because natural fibers and darker grounds can change perceived contrast, fine detail, and apparent gloss.

What file does a printer need for spot UV?

A printer needs the CMYK artwork plus a clearly labeled spot UV mask that shows only the areas receiving gloss. Keep the mask aligned with the dieline and away from folds, cut lines, glue flaps, and very fine details. Review both files together before approval so registration, hierarchy, and the opening view stay clear.

Which box structures can use selective gloss?

Straight tuck end, reverse tuck end, auto-lock bottom, crash-lock, mailer, sleeve, and two-piece rigid structures can all be evaluated for selective gloss. Artwork should avoid functional folds and glue areas. A mailer may emphasize the opening panel, while a sleeve can reserve gloss for a narrow band or logo that remains visible around the product.

What should I ask about if the box touches food?

Food-contact packaging requires a product-specific review of materials, inks, coatings, and the separation between printed surfaces and contents. Ask us about food-contact options for your product, then confirm the intended use, barrier needs, and handling conditions before approving the construction. A decorative finish does not establish suitability by itself.
